Client server computing and its benefits

There is no disagreement that the client / server computing can result in savings of current and future implementation, but generally the new technology cost / benefit analysis alone is not justified. Other major benefits are intangible and hard to quantify.

Dollar Savings:

Expensive to maintain Mainframe environment - hardware, software, and staff necessary to maintain and develop applications are very expensive. Staff at the client / server platforms and maintenance required to maintain contracts that are moderate in cost. Mainframe hardware and network-based environment, significant cost savings relative to the expenditure can be identified. When more power is required for a server, it can easily be expanded rather than replaced, as is often required in the mainframe-based environment.

Client / server technology organizations to protect existing investments by using existing tools and scalable, expandable by using products that allows to protect future investments.

Productivity growth:

Both users and developers more client / server tools are productive. Users more involved in the development process and application control, once it is operational. They have their work transparent data access and a standard, easy to use interface to the data.

End-user productivity:

Flexible data access to end users was provided by first fourth-generation languages, although early versions only provided access to their own proprietary databases. Transparent for later use other data sources included as well. But was driven command line interface. User commands and their arguments had to know. Although there were procedural languages, the syntax was an inherent degree.

Developer Productivity:

Developers be more productive and client / server development tools can use. Applications can be designed to be applied, and an environment client / server has been tested very quickly in a mainframe environment. Most client / server development tools use object-oriented technology. Windows, including those controlled by the user objects, the most that can be adapted and used in many applications.
Development platform is a desktop machine. All phases of application development - designing, coding, testing, implementation, and can maintain the performance of a desktop machine.

Flexibility and scalability:

By segmenting the application tasks, an organization can easily migrate to new technologies or enhance existing technologies with little or no interruption. An upgrade of the server itself should be little impact on applications.

Client / server computing to be effective, must be supported multiple environments. When applications are the perfect size, it is important that there is connectivity between platform components.
